SAUDI ARABIA / EGYPT: Sayeda Zeinab – The story of the ‘chief of el-Diwan’ (6- 62 hijri)

In the heart of Historic Cairo, the mausoleum and mosque of Sayeda Zeinab (6-62 hijri), the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad, centres the square and district that holds her name.

Sayeda Zeinab is known among Egyptians as Om Hashim (Hashim’s mother) since she was the one who took care of the wounded and martyred members of her tribe during the battle of Karbala. She is also known as El-Tahra (The Pure) and as ” Om El-Awagez” (mother of the disabled) because she attended to elderly and disabled women. Egyptians also know her by the title El-Mushira (The One to Consult) and Raeisat El-Diwan (The chief of diwan) because she opened her house for the people who sought her guidance and proclaimed her the head of her diwan of spiritual guidance.

Born in the sixth year of Hijra in Madina, this bright and beautiful girl was known for her sound mind and intellect and was often referred to as Aqilat Bani Hashem (The sound mind of the tribe of Bani Hashim).

She got married and had four boys and two girls. She became known for her gatherings on Islamic jurisprudence, where she shared her knowledge. She lived a simple, pious life until she witnessed the harshest moments in Islamic History.

In Aisha Abdel-Rahman’s book titled Al-Saida Zeinab Aqilat Bani Hashim, published in 1985 by Dar El-Ketab El-Araby, she was described as the hero of the famous Karbala battle, which occurred between the party of Al-Hussien Ibn Ali, grandson of the prophet Muhammed and Yazid Ibn Umayya. Sayeda Zeinab was spotted protecting the women, soothing the injured, and protecting the bodies of the dead. She lost her brother Al-Hussien in this battle but managed to spare the life of his son Ali Zein Al-Abdein, a child back then.

After losing this battle, her staying in Al-Madina became a real threat to the Umayyads after they seized the caliphate and killed Al-Hussien and almost all of Prophet Muhammed’s descendants (Ahl al-Bayt). Consequently, Sayeda Zeinab, the representative of the Ahl al-Bayt had to choose their exile. She chose Egypt, arriving in modern-day Cairo in year 61 of Hijra.

When she came to Egypt with her family, almost all Egyptians came out to greet her. She was greatly honoured by the Egyptian people who visited her and consulted her constantly on her premises at Qanater Al-Sibaa (The Lions Barrages ), approximately the current location of El-Sayeda Zeinab’s mosque and mausoleum.

According to Ali Pasha Mubarak’s series Al-Khetat Al-Tawfiqia, ” Sayeda Zeinab Street was named after Sayeda Zeinab, daughter of Imam Ali, bless be upon him, because this is where her mausoleum is situated in a golden copper compartment with an embroidery silk cover underneath a high dome that is situated inside Al-Zainabi mosque near Qanater Al-Sibaa. The mosque was renovated by Prince Ali Pasha Al-Wazir in 955. Then, it was renovated and enlarged during the reign of Prince Abdel-Rahman Katkhuda in 1173. The mosque is always full of visitors. A Hadra (Sufi ritual of praising God’s presence) is held every Sunday night, and a Maqraa ( A night of reading the Quran) is held every Wednesday night. The mosque also witnesses the celebration of her Moulid (her ascension) every year,” reads the book.

Touched by the emotions of Egyptians, Sayeda Zeinab is said to have blessed Egypt, saying:  ” O People of Egypt, you stood by us, may God stand by you, you were our refuge, may God be yours, you helped us, may God always help you out of all difficulties. “

She died in year 62 of Hijra, with conflicting stories surrounding her burial. Some say she was buried in Madina. Others say she was buried in Egypt. But the fact remains that she came to Egypt and that her presence is still felt, appreciated and celebrated. People still refer to her for spiritual guidance.

Her annual moulid, one of the largest and most iconic, takes place on the 28th of Ragab in the Hijri year.

MOROCCO: The First Moroccan Watchmaker Fouad Zrhari Embraces Arab, Moroccan Culture with Timeless Elegance

Besides his Elaqsa Watches and the newly launched Lion Watch, Fouad Zrhari unveiled plans to launch a third brand in 2024 that is entirely Moroccan.

 In the world of horology, where time is measured with precision and elegance is crafted into every tick of the clock, Moroccan watchmaker Fouad Zrhari managed to fuse passion and craftsmanship and create meticulously designed pieces.

In an interview with Morocco World News, Zrhari shared his journey, one that transformed his love for watchmaking into a brand that blends the artistry of Arabic calligraphy and Morocco’s rich heritage.

A Passion ignited by chance

Zrhari’s love for watchmaking began by chance, as he describes it as “just a coup de foudre,” love at first sight. 

It was the charm of timepieces that captured his heart and the idea of creating an instrument capable of measuring time, with its intricate mechanical diversity, was simply fascinating.

“The idea of creating an instrument that measures time fascinates me,” he said, adding that “the precision of tiny pieces fitting together one by one until they tell the time is just incredible.”

Like many young individuals searching for their path in life, Zrhari initially found himself at a crossroads. He stumbled upon an opportunity to attend a school for micro-mechanics, a choice that would become instrumental in shaping his destiny. 

Little did he know that this decision would later lay the foundation for his future world of watchmaking. “The effort I exerted during that time serves me well today in the world of watchmaking,” he underlined.

“The school of micro-mechanics brought me immense value because it shares many similarities with instruments of measurement and calculation” which are used in watchmaking, he explained.

With his newfound skills, Zrhari went on to work with prestigious names in the industry, including Franck Muller, Roger Dubuis, and Jaeger-LeCoultre, which became his training ground. He reminisced about those days when celebrities graced the workshops.

Within these workshops, Zrhari undertook various roles, each offering a unique perspective on the art of watchmaking. 

Through various roles and tasks, he learned the intricacies of the watchmaking process and emphasized the importance of the diverse trades within the industry. “This experience taught me about the entire process of watchmaking,” he said.

Turning a Dream into Reality 

Yet, the defining moment of Zrhari’s journey came when he decided to take a leap of faith. Despite the challenges and strict regulations of designing watches while employed in Switzerland, he chose to work discreetly from his own home.

It was a risk, but it was fueled by a dream. “I saw many Arab personalities visiting the workshops and ordering their own models,” Zrhari recalled. “I turned to my friend and asked, ‘Why don’t Arabs manufacture their own watches?’ I didn’t understand it. Even though it might not be easy, I felt we should at least try.”

The response he received was one of doubt and skepticism. “Impossible,” his friend responded as he laughed. “It’s very difficult to gain recognition, very difficult to sell, and very difficult to invest in, as it demands a significant amount of money and time,” his friend told him.

However, Zrhari embraced this skepticism as a challenge, one he was determined to overcome.

That’s when Zehari decided to craft timepieces that are more than mere instruments that tell time, but a reflection of his heritage and a celebration of Arab culture.

Championing Arab Heritage in Watchmaking

Zrhari has infused his watches with a distinctive signature that pays homage to his Moroccan origins. “Arabic calligraphy, whether subtly concealed or prominently displayed, and Indo-Arabic numerals adorning the dial are the hallmarks of my creations,” Zrhari proudly said. 

His watches stand as unique works of art, capturing the essence of his Moroccan roots.

These watches are not just timekeeping instruments; they are an embodiment of his identity, designed to be “recognizable from a distance,” Zrahri said.

What sets them apart further is their exclusivity. Zrhari’s watches are exceptionally limited in number, with the ultra-exclusive Elaqsa Watches, and the newly launched Lion Watch offering affordability to a wider audience. 

Zrhari’s promise of a third brand, entirely Moroccan, in 2024 hints at an exciting future, where Zrhari’s artistry and Moroccan heritage will shine brightly in the world of horology.

Today, Zrhari’s journey has evolved into a mission. His passion for watchmaking has become more than just a hobby, as it is now a driving force with a clear purpose. 

“There is a huge market and enthusiasm in this business,” Zrhari emphasized as he spoke of his ambition to establish a watchmaking training center in Morocco. This endeavor is not just about creating timepieces; it’s about creating added value for the African continent, he noted.

In addition, Zrahri conveyed an important message of perseverance and ambition to the youth. 

“Don’t give up, even when faced with difficulties,” Zrhari advised. “Failure is not a setback; it’s an opportunity to become even stronger.”

He encouraged young individuals to transform their passion into a profession, regardless of the field they choose. With faith and determination, success will eventually come their way, he concluded.

ABU DHABI, U.A.E: ‘Zayed Sustainability Prize’ announces 33 Finalists Advancing Global Sustainability Initiatives

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, the UAE’s pioneering global sustainability and humanitarian award, has announced this year’s finalists following a deliberation by its esteemed Jury.

The winners will be announced at the Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony on 1st December during the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held from 30th November to 12th December.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize’s Jury elected the 33 finalists from 5,213 entries received across six categories: Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action and Global High Schools – a 15 percent increase in submissions compared to last year. The new Climate Action category, introduced to mark the UAE’s Year of Sustainability and hosting of COP28 UAE, received 3,178 nominations.

From Brazil, Indonesia, Rwanda and 27 other countries, the finalists represent small and medium sized businesses, nonprofit organisations and high schools, and reflect the Prize’s growing mandate to reward innovations that transcend borders and tackle pressing global challenges.

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, COP28 President-Designate and Director-General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, said the finalists exemplify the remarkable ingenuity and unwavering commitment to shaping a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet.

Dr. Al Jaber added, “The Zayed Sustainability Prize carries forward the enduring legacy of UAE’s visionary leader, Sheikh Zayed, whose commitment to sustainability and humanitarianism continues to inspire us. This legacy remains the guiding light of our nation’s aspirations, propelling us forward in our mission to uplift communities around the globe. Over the past 15 years, the Prize has been a powerful force for positive change, transforming the lives of over 378 million people across 151 countries. Through the Prize’s 106 winners to date, 11 million people have gained access to safe drinking water, 54 million homes have gained access to reliable energy, 3.5 million people have gained access to more nutritious food, and over 728,000 people have gained access to affordable healthcare.

The Health finalists are:
• Alkion BioInnovations is an SME from France that specialises in supplying cost effective and sustainable active ingredients for large-scale pharmaceuticals and vaccines.
• ChildLife Foundation is an NPO from Pakistan that employs an innovative Hub & Spoke healthcare model, linking Emergency Rooms as hubs to telemedicine satellite centres.
• doctorSHARE is an NPO from Indonesia dedicated to expanding healthcare access in remote and inaccessible regions using barge-mounted floating hospitals.

The Food finalists are:
• Gaza Urban & Peri-urban Agricultural Platform is an NPO from Palestine that empowers female agripreneurs in Gaza to achieve food security in their communities.
• Regen Organics is an SME from Kenya that specialises in a municipal-scale manufacturing process that produces insect-based protein for livestock feed and organic fertiliser for horticultural production.
• Semilla Nueva is an NPO from Guatemala that specialises in the development of biofortified maize seeds.

The Energy finalists are:
• Husk Power Systems is an SME from the United States of America that deploys AI-enabled minigrids that provide 24/7 renewable energy to homes, micro enterprises, health clinics, and schools.
• Ignite Power is an SME from Rwanda that specialises in delivering solar powered pay-as-you-go solutions to electrify last mile communities.
• Koolboks is an SME from France that provides off-grid solar refrigeration solutions with integrated Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring for last mile communities, through a lease-to-own sales model.


The Water finalists are:
• ADADK is an SME from Jordan that employs wireless smart sensors that use machine learning and augmented reality for the detection of both visible and hidden water leaks.
• Eau et Vie is an NPO from France that offers individual taps to the homes of impoverished urban residents, ensuring access to clean water in slum areas.
• TransForm is an NPO from Denmark that employs innovative soil filter technology for the cost-effective treatment of wastewater, sewage, and sludge without relying on energy or chemicals.

The Climate Action finalists are:
• CarbonCure is an SME from Canada that specialises in carbon removal technology. They inject CO₂ into fresh concrete, effectively reducing its carbon footprint while maintaining performance standards.
• Foundation for Amazon Sustainability is an NPO from Brazil that is dedicated to implementing projects and programmes that advance environmental conservation and empower indigenous communities to protect their rights.
• Kelp Blue is an SME from Namibia that contributes to the restoration of natural ocean wilderness and the mitigation of excess CO₂ by establishing large-scale giant kelp forests in deep waters.

The Global High Schools’ finalists presented project-based, student-led sustainability solutions, with finalists divided into 6 regions. The regional finalists include:

The Americas: Colegio De Alto Rendimiento La Libertad (Peru); Liceo Baldomero Lillo Figueroa (Chile); and New Horizons School (Argentina).
Europe and Central Asia: Northfleet Technology College (United Kingdom); Presidential School in Tashkent (Uzbekistan); and Split International School (Croatia).
Middle East & North Africa: International School (Morocco); JSS International School (United Arab Emirates); and Obour STEM School (Egypt).
Sub-Saharan Africa: Gwani Ibrahim Dan Hajja Academy (Nigeria); Lighthouse Primary and Secondary School (Mauritius); and USAP Community School (Zimbabwe).
South Asia: India International Public School (India); KORT Education Complex (Pakistan); and Obhizatrik School (Bangladesh).
East Asia and the Pacific: Beijing No. 35 High School (China); Swami Vivekananda College (Fiji); and South Hill School, Inc. (The Philippines).

In the Health, Food, Energy, Water and Climate Action categories, each winner receives US$600,000. Each of the six winning Global High Schools receives up to US$100,000.

لجنة التحكيم.        وسيتم الإعلان عن الفائزين في حفل توزيع الجوائز الذي تعقده الجائزة يوم الأول من ديسمبر القادم خلال مؤتمر الدول الأطراف في اتفاقية الأمم المتحدة الإطارية بشأن تغير المناخ “COP28” الذي تستضيفه دولة الإمارات في الفترة الممتدة من 30 نوفمبر إلى 12 ديسمبر المقبلين.        واختارت اللجنة 30 مرشحاً ضمن ست فئات تشمل الصحة والغذاء والطاقة والمياه والعمل المناخي والمدارس الثانوية العالمية.         كانت الجائزة قد تلقت هذا العام 5,213 طلب مشاركة، محققةً بذلك زيادة بنسبة 15 في المائة مقارنة بالدورة الماضية.. واستقطبت فئة العمل المناخي وحدها والتي تم استحداثها مؤخراً تزامناً مع الصناعية.   – مؤسسة الأطباء للرعاية “doctorSHARE”، وهي منظمة غير ربحية في إندونيسيا تعمل على توسيع نطاق خدمات الرعاية الصحية لتصل إلى المناطق النائية باستخدام المستشفيات العائمة المحمولة على السفن. المؤسسات  الصغيرة والمتوسطة في رواندا، وتقدم حلول الشراء بنموذج الدفعات الدورية (go-you-as-pay) بالاعتماد على الطاقة الشمسية لإمداد المجتمعات بطاقة الكهرباء. – “كولبوكس”، وهي من فئة المؤسسات الصغيرة والمتوسطة في فرنسا، وتوفر من خلال نموذج التأجير المنتهي بالتمليك حلول التبريد بالطاقة الشمسية والمدعومة بنظام مراقبة قائم على تقنية إنترنت الأشياء (IoT) في المجتمعات غير المتصلة بشبكة الكهرباء.  وشملت أكسيد الكربون في الخرسانة أثناء مرحلة الإنتاج مما يقلل من حجم الانبعاثات بصورة فعالة دون التأثير على معايير الكفاءة والأداء.  – “مؤسسة استدامة الأمازون” هي منظمة غير ربحية في البرازيل، وتنشط في تنفيذ ERITREAN-SWEDISH Haisam Mohammed: Introducing the Swedish Fragrance brand UNIFORM Inspired by high-rise architecture

Founded in Sweden by emerging creative Haisam Mohammed, fragrance brand UNIFORM is gaining momentum internationally. Here, Mohammed walks us through his creative process.

Haisam Mohammed often found himself drawn to the stairwells of the Swedish high rise buildings he grew up in. It was in these meeting points between homes that the scents from the different households would cascade – from cooking, incense burning, and spices.

The son of immigrants who had escaped the conflict in Eritrea, Mohammed’s upbringing saw him surrounded by many different cultures – inspiring a passion for design, architecture and beauty.

Fast forward to 2018, and he would channel this inspiration into his independent fragrance brand, UNIFORM – a vegan, cruelty-free range of perfume oils produced in France.

Blending the minimalism of Scandinavian design with transportive scents drawn from around the world, the brand recently captured the attention of A-COLD-WALL* founder, Samuel Ross, who selected it to receive a grant from his foundation supporting Black-owned businesses.

We caught up with Mohammed to talk about developing the range, how the beauty industry can become more inclusive, and why the future of luxury is sustainable.

Wallpaper*: How did UNIFORM come about as a brand?

Haisam Mohammed: Throughout my life, I have always sought for new formats to express and communicate different cultural messages, but the one format that always stuck in the back of my head, was scents.

So UNIFORM began as a passion project. My interest in scents started in the stairwells of the high-rises in Sweden. Both the one I grew up in, and the ones that I visited throughout my upbringing. The smell of food cooking, incense being lit and spices being blended used to sip through the cracks of the doors of these families and accumulate in a special scent that I have had with me throughout my life. Hence the name UNIFORM.

Talk us through your three signature scents in the range.

Maghrib, which means sunset in Arabic, is our first creation. It was inspired by the experiences of watching the sunset from the rooftops of the high-rises during summer nights. It has cedarwood and tobacco in it, and is the scent that I most clearly recognize from my childhood home and, as I later came to realise, the homes of many more ethnic families as they were cooking, burning incense, and blending spices in their home.

Limbo is inspired by my personal experience of the conflicting emotions that I experienced while commuting between the city center and its outskirts where I live. You either feel like it is an escape or a refuge – therefore the name Limbo. It’s our most complicated scent, with a combination of rhubarb, hay, and sandalwood.

Cassis is inspired by the first-millisecond of scent you experience when disembarking a plane at a new destination, preferably in the south of France. It’s a fig-scent with elements of sandalwood and coconut.

What was your experience of growing up in Sweden?

My experience growing up was split between two places. A small town in the northern part of Sweden and Stockholm. There were kids from the diaspora in both places, and we managed to build our own culture, way of life, and language to communicate based on our parent’s heritage and the cultures we now resided in.

We were probably the first generation that grew up with the internet, so I managed to discover things within music, arts, and even food that the previous generation could only dream of. During this time I also understood the power of culture and that it sees no geographical borders. I began to understand that a person living 4000 miles away in a city like New York could still be interested in the same things I was.

How does this mix of cultures express itself in your scents?

Not only does the mix of culture express itself in our scents, but also the format that is presented in. Perfume oil is not as big of a deal in the West as it is in some parts of Africa and in Asia. I wanted to introduce the format to a new audience but I have great respect from where it came from. I discovered perfume oil from my father’s collection, which was made up of scents he bought from the mosque and carried with him at all time. 

How have architecture and design shaped the vision for UNIFORM?

They are a huge part of the vision. For our first installation display inside the department store NK, we commissioned the designer Simon Skinner to translate our brand into a physical art piece and the outcome became a structure inspired by the high-rises made out of limestone blocks.    

In an architectural sense, the brand stands on the idea of the stairwell, not only just being a place where you move between different levels but also a gathering location. A place where great conversations are taking place about everything from art to science to politics. 

In Sweden, a defunding of youth centers has been going on for years. Every winter when the youth centres were closed and we had nowhere to go, we always used a random stairwell as our meeting place/office/think centre until we got kicked out.

Redefining what luxury means is a key part of UNIFORM. Is this a shift you see happening in the world right now?

Definitely. In our case, we want to redefine what luxury must look like or where it comes from. In a standard measure, UNIFORM would not be considered luxury based on our background, where our story stems from, and how accessible we want our products to be. But luxury for us means high-quality products that are produced with a lot of care and attention to details. Luxury has nothing to do with heritage or who stands behind the brand.

The shift I see happening is that younger people’s aspiration has gone from wanting to buy luxury products to aspiring to buy sustainable products that they can show off. Sustainability is now the new luxury.

The packaging and design for the scents are very distinctive and minimal. How did you develop these?

UNIFORM was designed to be sleek and a product that you could carry around in your pocket or handbag at any time. It should be so convenient that you pick it up and apply a small amount throughout the day to feel your best. When it came to the bottle – the process was that it needed to be a statement piece to the degree that when you pull out the UNIFORM in public, everyone is intrigued. 

Because the bottle draws a lot of focus, I wanted to keep the packaging very minimal and just include the essential information. I enlisted the help of my friend Fredrika Larsson who designed the logo and helped with the packaging.

How do you think the beauty industry can be more representative? Do you feel that any progress is being made?

In two ways. Either we hire people who truly get the need for representation and are going to make a difference. Or we start our own brands like Fenty.

The beauty world has been getting better at showing diversity in front of the camera, but behind the camera there is a long way to go. Directors, photographers, make-up artists, and more important – clients still lack knowledge about why representation is important. I’m starting to think that people who do not work towards more representation, just don’t want to see improvement for under-represented groups. In this day and age, it is no longer about not knowing how to go about it. There is plenty of information online that only requires a Google search. For example, my friend created the platform Afripedia which is a curated database that connects clients and individuals with top African creatives around the world.

To be able to create innovation and further an industry you need more perspective. That is scientifically proven. You need to be open to listening and trying to understand people who don’t come from the same walks of life as you. Inclusivity should not be seen as goodwill or something charitable. It should be seen as a crucial part of an industry or a brand that wants to survive in the future.

You recently received a grant from Samuel Ross and A-Cold-Wall’s foundation to support Black-owned businesses – how do you plan to use this to develop the brand?

I am very grateful to Mr. Ross that he is using not only his platform but also his brand’s capital to inspire and uplift Black-owned businesses. That is admirable. As somebody who has financed this brand solely from my pocket, I plan to use the grant towards the expansion of UNIFORM to different parts of the world.

I said to Samuel that the plan is to pass it forward. My philosophy is that when somebody opens a door for you, you must do the same for the next person. This grant is no different. I plan to give back the same amount to the next creative entrepreneur that I meet in the near future.

What is coming next for UNIFORM? Do you have plans to develop the product range further?

We are excited for UNIFORM to be accessible in new markets and sharing our work with a lot more people across the globe. We are also looking forward to collaborating with cross-disciplinary artists to find ways to experience our perfumes in different contexts that will challenge their perception of scent.

Mohamed Al-Fayed had waged a war of words with the British royal family after his son was killed in a car accident alongside Diana, Princess of Wales.

Mohamed Al-Fayed was an outspoken and successful Egyptian business tycoon. His death comes almost 26 years to the day after the car crash in Paris that killed his eldest son, Dodi, and Diana, Princess of Wales, on August 31, 1997.

Here are five points on the self-made billionaire:

1.Far from being the scion of a dynasty of cotton and shipping barons he made himself out to be, Fayed was the son of a poor Alexandrian schoolteacher who, after an early venture flogging lemonade, set out in business selling sewing machines.

2.He later had the good fortune to start working for the arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, who recognised his business abilities and employed him in his furniture export business in Saudi Arabia. He became an advisor to the Sultan of Brunei in the mid-1960s and moved to Britain in the 1970s.

3.Fayed lived most of his life in Britain, where for decades he was never far from the headlines. But to his frustration, he was never granted UK citizenship or admitted into the upper echelons of British society.

4.The defining tragedy of Fayed’s life came in August 1997, when Dodi and Princess Diana died when a car driven by one of Fayed’s employees, chauffeur Henri Paul, crashed in a Paris road tunnel. For years afterwards, Fayed refused to accept that the deaths were the result of speeding and intoxication by Paul, who also died. The distraught Fayed accused the royal family of being behind the deaths and commissioned two memorials to the couple at Harrods.

5.According to Forbes list of the world’s billionaires, Fayed was worth $1.9 billion in November 2022. With a business empire encompassing shipping, property, banking, oil, retail, and construction, Fayed was also a philanthropist whose foundation helped children in the UK, Thailand, and Mongolia.

SAUDI ARABIA: Riyadh Public Library the ‘King Abdulaziz Public Library’ Unveils Rare, 19-Century Book on Arab-Islamic Monuments in Spain

The work, of which only 30 copies were made, contains paintings drawn by David Roberts in Andalusia in 1832-1833.

King Abdulaziz Public Library in Riyadh has unveiled a 190-year-old book by British artist David Roberts.

The work, of which only 30 copies were made, contains paintings drawn by Roberts in Andalusia in 1832-1833 depicting a number of famous landmarks he visited in Spain.

Roberts used natural colors in the book’s 26 lithograph-printed and hand-colored paintings.

Most of the painting are devoted to Arab-Islamic monuments and palaces in Andalusia, as the book offers splendid and beautiful images of Granada and the Alhambra Palace and the fine details of Islamic architectural inscriptions.

The leather-bound book’s pages are between 38 an 53 cm in size, whereas the spine bears a gilded title and decorations with words printed in black. The covers have geometric drawings, in addition to gilded and polished edges.

The Library acquired the book in 1997 when it obtained it from the library of King Don Carlos I of Portugal.

David Roberts, who lived between 1796 and 1864, was considered one of the most prominent British painters in the 19th century and was one of the few who worked in this art form during his time.

His style of painting was easy to recognize as lithography was the only method during that time to produce accurate, true-to-life images.

Roberts was a scene painter at the Theater Royal in Edinburgh, and produced a group of oil paintings that included scenes from England, Scotland, France, and Belgium.

He toured Egypt and Syria and published a six-volume book, three of which were drawings in Egypt, and three were paintings in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan.

MOROCCAN Engineers Claim Two Medals in ‘iCAN 2023 International Innovation Salon’ Toronto, Canada

Moroccan Engineering Lab won two prestigious awards at the International Innovation Salon in Toronto, Canada.

Smarti Lab, a research laboratory affiliated with the Moroccan School of Engineering Sciences (EMSI), claimed two gold medals and two prestigious awards at the iCAN 2023 International Innovation Exhibition held in Toronto, Canada.

The lab’s winning invention is called the “Smart Wastewater Treatment Station” (SGWT), which is a “green, and mobile” wastewater treatment station. 

According to a statement from EMSI, the innovation addresses a critical global issue and represents a “significant leap forward” in sustainable water management.

The smart wastewater treatment station was in response to the current global water crisis, EMSI said in the statement. 

The second medal went to the “Meat Quality Verification System” (SMT), a system that offers a “simple and rapid solution for assessing the quality of various types of meat.” 

The solution relies on mechanisms that analyze meat quality using specialized integrated units. The system addresses critical health and safety concerns related to meat consumption, the statement explains.

Over the years, EMSI secured a number of awards for innovation. The engineering school has won a total of 85 awards and medals on both national and international fronts.

Engineers from the school previously participated in international innovation competitions such as ICAN in Canada, Silicon Valley in the United States, the International Innovation Exhibition in China, ISIF in Turkey, Intarg in Poland, and EuroInvent in Romania, among others.

The Canada exhibition was held from August 23 to 26, and it featured participants from 50 countries with over 800 inventions.

EGYPT’s Islamic Cultural Center, Misr Mosque Claims 3 Guinness World Records

President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi listened to an explanation of the details of Egypt’s Islamic Cultural Center and the Egypt’s Grand Mosque, during his visit to the New Administrative Capital at dawn, Thursday, to join workers for the first suhoor in the blessed month of Ramadan.

The first was for the largest pulpit in the world with a height of 16.6 meters, handcrafted from the finest types of wood.

The second and third were for the main chandelier of the mosque, being the heaviest chandelier in the world of 50 tons, and it being the largest chandelier with a diameter of 22 meters and four levels.

SAUDI ARABIA: Saudi Standards,Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) Ties up with over 60 Entities Worldwide to Promote Halal Products

Saudi Arabia has stepped up measures to increase the scope of halal foods following the partnership of Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, also known as SASO, with several entities, the agency said. 

“More than 60 accredited entities from around the world work with us in the halal sector,” Nawaf Al-Shahri, head of the conformity assessment body acceptance department at SASO, told Arab News. 

This information was revealed on the sidelines of the Thai Trade Exhibition Riyadh 2023, a four-day event that began on Aug. 27 at the Riyadh International Convention & Exhibition Center.

Al-Shahri further elaborated that SASO’s primary role in this sector involves accrediting entities responsible for issuing certificates for halal products beyond the Kingdom’s borders.

This responsibility complements the Food and Drug Authority’s task of certifying imported products in Saudi Arabia.

The authority is currently assessing the competence of these entities and will subsequently grant them a certificate of acceptance based on their qualifications. The Halal Center will then oversee their operations, both within their offices and in practical settings.

Winai Dahlan, founding director of the Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University, highlighted that there has been a noticeable increase in interest in halal meat among Thais in recent decades. 

In 2003, the establishment of the cabinet marked a significant milestone in the evolution of halal products in Thailand. 

He indicated that the growing interest in halal meat among Thais is fundamentally rooted in religious considerations. 

In 1995, he founded the Halal Science Center at Chulalongkorn University to create a hub for the advancement of halal science in Thailand. 

The principal duties of the center encompass the research and development of halal science and technology aimed at supporting the expansion of the industry while ensuring the quality and safety of the specialized products. 

The halal products sector stands as one of the world’s fastest-growing industries, with a projected 6.1 percent increase in spending on food and beverages, anticipated to reach $1.9 trillion by 2023.

Islamic spending on halal pharmaceuticals was $87 billion in 2017 and is expected to reach $131 billion by 2023. Meanwhile, spending on cosmetics was $61 billion in 2017 and is projected to reach $90 billion by 2023. 

Dr. Yousuf Al-Harbi, director of the Halal Center, affirmed that halal meat is a societal norm in Saudi Arabia.

He pointed out that the center aims to meet halal food requirements, adding that they are continually confident that “any local product we guarantee is 100 percent halal.” 

“We have several initiatives, especially regarding the reliability of Halal food, from farm to consumer table, confirming that their experience in this area is thriving,” said Al-Harbi. 

He said they are committed to ensuring that meats and poultry are slaughtered and stored according to Islamic law.

SOMALI-CANADIAN: Ahmed Hussen: From Somali Refugee to Canada’s Parliament

Ahmed Hussen came to Canada from Somalia as a refugee. Now he’s the new minister of immigration.

Along with thousands of compatriots, Ahmed Hussen fled war-ravaged Somalia for a better life in Canada.

Hussen’s journey took him from Mogadishu to Toronto and then on to Ottawa’s Parliament Hill, where the former Somali refugee was named this week as the country’s newest minister of immigration in a reshuffle of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Cabinet.

It was a fast political rise for the rookie politician, and will put Hussen, who arrived in Canada in 1993 as a 16-year-old, in charge of the complex portfolio that oversees who is welcomed into the country.

Friends say the lawyer and social activist will be able to draw from personal experience in his new role.

Mahamad Accord, who has known Hussen for years through his work with the Canadian Somali Congress, says his friend has not forgotten his modest roots despite walking Canada’s corridors of power.

“He didn’t change,” he says. “The people around him changed.”

Accord recalls Hussen offering him help a few years back. The Somali community in the provinces of Ontario and Alberta were struggling to tackle the deaths of dozens of young Somali men due to drug and gun violence.

He says Hussen did not shy away from speaking openly about the problems plaguing the Somali community in Canada, from high rates of poverty and unemployment to gang involvement.

But Hussen was also aware of how the community could be stigmatised, and was always careful in how he spoke and presented himself. Accord says his friend would tell him “we need to change people’s perception of us”.

“He expects high standards,” he says.

Accord admits he was sometimes jealous of the lawyer and social activist’s ability to get across a difficult message diplomatically.

It was that ability that struck former Ontario politician George Smitherman when he first met Hussen in 1999. Hussen was then fighting for the interest of Regent Park, a multi-ethnic neighbourhood in downtown Toronto where he had settled with one of his brothers upon his arrival in Canada.

In 2015, he told the Toronto Star that a backlog in refugee applications for permanent residency at the time meant he could not qualify for a student loan. Living in the public housing allowed him to save enough to go to university.

Hussen lobbied to help secure funds to revitalise the crime-ridden housing project, co-founding the Regent Park Community Council.

Some long-time residents had to move out of their homes during the redevelopment and were fearful they would not be able to return; Hussen worked to ensure their interests were protected.

“There was an extraordinary tension because there was distrust and concerns among tenants,” recalls Smitherman. “Ahmed had to very carefully but forcefully represent their interests.”

Smitherman, who calls the 40-year-old Mr Hussen an “old soul”, later helped him land a job working with former Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty.

“He was someone who spoke with a calmness and an informed knowledge and a maturity that defied his circumstances, both as someone who was young and someone who had taken this awesomely courageous step of leaving Africa for Canada.”

Mr Hussen swept his Toronto riding in November 2015, though he drew criticism for not living in the disadvantaged riding he was elected to represent.

Speaking last April in the House of Commons, he raised concerns about the recent drowning death of hundreds of migrants from Somalia and the Horn of Africa, saying: “Asylum seekers are not criminals. They are human beings in need of protection and assistance and deserving of our respect”.

Smitherman sees Hussen’s background as both an asset and a possible disadvantage in the challenging portfolio.

“It sets up for tensions also as expectations are increased,” he says.

Following his swearing-in, Mr Hussen, the father of three boys, told media he was “extremely proud of our country’s history as a place of asylum, a place that opens its doors and hearts to new immigrants and refugees”.

Hussen has always referred to himself as a Canadian first and Somali second, says Accord. In 2015 Mr Hussen told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that he does not want to be labelled a “Somali MP”.

“I’m a Canadian. Somali is my heritage and I’m proud of my heritage but I have a lot to contribute to Canada. And I’m a mainstream guy. I’m not limited by my community,” he said.

Hussen replaces John McCallum, a veteran politician who is going to become Canada’s envoy to China after managing Trudeau government efforts to bring in over 39,000 Syrian refugees in the last 13 months.

“The real message of the new appointment is that the government wishes to profile refuges as a more salient part of our immigration program,’ says Jeffrey Reitz, a University of Toronto sociology professor.

“But it does raise the question of the mainstream immigration programme,” he says.

The rookie minister will face challenges in the key, and rarely uncontroversial, portfolio.

McCallum recently introduced contentious changes to Canada’s popular family reunification programme, replacing a first-come, first-serve process with a lottery system to randomly choose 10,000 people who filled out initial applications to express interest. Critics say that reuniting families should not depend on luck of the draw.

Another recent decision to scrap a rule limiting how long foreign workers can stay in Canada is being targeted by the opposition as potentially harmful to the country’s work force in the long run. Immigrant rights groups have been critical of the programme, arguing the workers under the program are vulnerable to abuse by employers.

He will also have to defend a recent Liberal decision to significantly reduce the number of private sponsorship applications for Syrian and Iraqi refugees because of a current backlog.

Canada plans to bring in 300,000 immigrants in 2017, the majority of them economic immigrants.
