Sharjah Fencing Club Crowned Champion of Arab Fencing Clubs Championships (AFCC) : September 2021

The Sharjah Fencing Club (SFC) was crowned champion of the Arab Fencing Clubs Championship (AFCC).

The Clubs’s winners won 17 medals, including 5 Gold, 4 Silver and 8 Bronze in two categories, which included the General Category and the Young Category for Men an Women under the age of 20.

211 male and female players representing 12 clubs from 6 Arab countries participated in the AFCC Championship.

The club’s fencing players took first place in the foil and épée weapons, as well as second place in the sabre weapon, in the men’s category. In the foil and sabre weapons, the young division took first place, as well as third place in the épée.

The Championship was hosted by the Al Thiqa Club for the Disabled in Sharjah.

Ain Shams University- Egypt, Wins Unesco Literacy Prize : September 2021

Ain Shams University in Egypt is awarded the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy 2021 for its project ‘Ain Shams University experience in organizing online literacy classes for rural areas in Egypt’.

The Cairo university is one of six international recipients recognised for outstanding inclusive distance and digital learning projects in Covid times.

Egypt’s Ain Shams University has won the Unesco Confucius Prize for Literacy for its project that uses digital technology to teach literacy in rural areas of the country.

The annual Unesco international literacy prizes were awarded to six programmes from Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Guatemala, India, Mexico and South Africa, on International Literacy Day.

Ain Shams University president Prof Mahmoud El Meteini spoke in an online event held to recognise the award recipients on Thursday.

The Unesco Confucius Prize for Literacy was established in 2005 with the support of the Chinese government. Each of the three prizewinners will receive a medal, a diploma and a cash prize of $30,000.

The Unesco King Sejong Literacy Prize, sponsored by the Korean government and established in 1989, gives special consideration to language-based literacy development. The three winners will receive a medal, a diploma and a cash prize of $20,000.

Handball: Zamalek Win African Super Cup: September 10th, 2021

Zamalek, Egyptian Sporting Club based in Cairo.

Zamalek snatched a dramatic 28-27 victory over Cairo rivals Ahly on Friday to win the African Super Cup and qualify for next month’s IHF Super Globe.

Yehia El-Deraa’s powerful shot with only three seconds remaining gave Zamalek a precious victory as they swept to a third consecutive African Super Cup title.

Zamalek took their tally to seven Super Cup triumphs, just two behind record winners GS Petroliers of Algeria

Al-Sharjah Honors 4 Egyptian Writers at Egypt’s Supreme Council of Culture : September 2021

The honored writers are the poet Darwish El-Asyouty and the writers Said Noah, Samir El-Manzalawi, and Mustafa Nasr.

 The Department of Culture in the Emirate of Al-Sharjah honored four Egyptians, in the presence of Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Culture Hisham Azmy and Abdullah Mohammad Al Owais, head of the Department of Culture in Al-Sharjah, on September 2 at the headquarters of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Culture.

Abdel Dayem praised the decision of the Al-Sharjah Forum for Cultural Honors in Egypt, which is sponsored by Sultan bin Mohammad Al-Qasimi, to honor the aforementioned Egyptian writers.

UAE Pavilion Wins Prestigious Golden Lion Award at Venice Architecture Biennale: August 2021

Wetland, the UAE’s innovative pavilion at this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale, has been awarded the prestigious Golden Lion for Best National Participation.

More than 60 nations developed national pavilions, including the UAE’s Wetland exhibition, which was curated by Wael Al Awar and Kenichi Teramoto.

Wetland examines the potential for creating sustainable building materials from the UAE’s salt flats or sabkhas and features an environmentally friendly cement produced with recycled desalinated water.

HISTORY : United Kingdom Grants Egypt Partial Independence in 1936 – August 26th.

The signing of a treaty between the United Kingdom and Egypt, during which the United Kingdom agreed to grant Egypt partial independence in return for establishing its complete control over the Suez Canal.

The Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1936 (officially, The Treaty of Alliance Between His Majesty, in Respect of the United Kingdom, and His Majesty, the King of Egypt) was a treaty signed between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Egypt.

Under the terms of the treaty, the United Kingdom was required to withdraw all its troops from Egypt, except those necessary to protect the Suez Canal and its surroundings, numbering 10,000 troops plus auxiliary personnel. Additionally, the United Kingdom would supply and train Egypt’s army and assist in its defence in case of war. The treaty was to last for 20 years; it was negotiated in the Zaafarana Palace , signed in London on 26 August 1936 and ratified on 22 December. It was registered in League of Nations Treaty Series on 6 January 1937.

Works of Respected Omani Scholar Sheikh Abdulrahman Al Ka’abi Documented by NRAA

Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Saif bin Mohammed Al Ka’abi (1870 – 1950).

The National Records & Archives Authority (NRAA) has indexed, renovated and documented electronically in twenty volumes hundreds of manuscripts and records of the works of a noted scholar Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Saif bin Mohammed Al Ka’abi.

Hailing from Masah Village in the Wilayat of Mahdah, Governorate of Al Buraimi, Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Saif bin Mohammed Al Ka’abi lived from 1870 to 1950.

heikh Abdulrahman Al Ka’abi excelled in various sciences, and arts and used to teach his students at the Mosque of Masah Village, located 11 kilometres from the centre of the wilayat.

A majority of these manuscripts were hand-written by Sheikh Abdulrahman Al Ka’abi and others under his guidance.

The manuscripts cover a number of topics, including the Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) and writings in the fields of Ifta (legal opinion), poetry, art and interpretation of the Holy Quran among other fields.  

Khalid bin Said bin Abdulrahman Al Ka’abi one of the grandsons of scholar Sheikh Abdulrahman Al Ka’abi expressed thanks to the NRAA for documenting such manuscripts as they are of historic value  and evidence for the  intellectual products  of scholars, artists and poets.

UNESCO Elects Saudi Arabia as Vice-Chair of World Heritage Committee for 2021-2023 : August 2021

The member states of the World Heritage Committee of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) elected Saudi Arabia as vice chair of the Arab group for the period between 2021 and 2023 at the organization’s 44th session held in Fuzhou in China.

Princess Haifa bint Abdul Aziz Al-Muqrin, the Kingdom’s permanent representative at UNESCO, said that the election of the Kingdom had occurred due to its prominent role in supporting world heritage alongside the committee’s member states, in addition to achieving UNESCO’s objectives in general, and the committee’s objectives in particular.

Rare Books Shed Light on History of the Arab world

Book dealer Peter Harrington’s latest catalogue will be represented at the Abu Dhabi Book Fair in May 2021.

This “apparently unique” bespoke album contains 120 original photographs of Jeddah’s well-known Bayt Nassif, taken before its restoration in the early 1980s.

Account of a 19th-century journey from Jeddah to Egypt

In 1819, Sir Miles Nightingall, commander-in-chief of Britain’s Bombay Army, was returning to England from India when their ship “Teignmouth” was grounded on a sandbank in the Gulf of Aden. Having got their boat moving again, Nightingall and his entourage — including Captain James Hanson, the author of this work — headed to Jeddah “where they were welcomed by the Turkish governor, newly installed following the restoration of Ottoman rule in Egypt.

Journals of a British naval officer in the Arabian Gulf 1928-51

This three-volume manuscript relate to Midshipman Francis Wyatt Rawson Larken’s service in the British Royal Navy in the early-to-mid 20th century, for part of which Larken was stationed in the Arabian Gulf around what the British then called the Trucial States, which later became the UAE.

British intelligence manual from the time of the ‘Arab Revolt’

This manual includes material from T.E. Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia) and was produced by the British Arab Bureau as a guide to the “tribal and political organization, geography and passable routes in the region” at the time of the military uprising by Arab forces against the Ottoman Empire during World War I, led by Hussein bin Ali, the sherif of Makkah, backed by the British government.

Eyewitness account of a Danish expedition to Arabia in the 1760s

An English translation of a two-volume account of the 1761-7 Danish expedition to the region — “the first great scientific expedition to the Middle East” — by the surveyor Carsten Niebuhr, the only member of that expedition to survive.

A chronicle of traditional Arab seamanship

The full title of this work from 1940 is “Sons of Sinbad. An Account of Sailing with the Arabs in their Dhows, in the Red Sea, around the Coasts of Arabia, and to Zanzibar and Tanganyika; Pearling in the Persian Gulf; and the Life of the Shipmasters, the Mariners and Merchants of Kuwait.” As it suggests, the book — written by Australian adventurer Alan Villiers
